How to Stop a German Shepherd From Barking at Home

All dogs bark as it is their way to communicate. Dogs bark for various reasons: to greet, to alert, out of boredom, to attract attention, or when they've been excited. When you happen to share the house with neighbors, training your dog not to bark is a top priority.

Though some forms of barking are acceptable, a lot of barking is, undoubtedly, irritating. Especially for your neighbors and it may eventually cause complaints. The easiest and fastest way to stop a problematic barker is to control their barking while you are at home.

So how to stop a German Shepherd from barking?

It takes only following these three steps.

  1. Set a situation up where your dog will constantly bark. For example, ask someone to ring your doorbell or knock on your door.
  1. When your dog charges towards the door and begin to bark loudly, approach your dog, grab their collar, and provide the command “quiet.” Do not yell, however as it doesn’t help.
  1. If they stops barking, reward and praise them. They are a genius and deserve it.

If they continue barking however, close your hand over their mouth by wrapping your fingers around their muzzle (use both hands if needed), and give command for them to keep quiet. Then, praise them if they stop. Be careful when doing it.

Most dogs would be able to learn the command, “quiet,“ with consistent training like all other commands. Create similar situations that force your dog to bark and duplicate training whenever possible.

Use these methods below if you have a serious barker.

  1. Vinegar-water solution: Mix a solution that is 7/8 water & 1/8 vinegar together. Then, pour the mixture into a water pistol or what kids call a “super soaker” for longer distance shooting.
  1. Aim and shoot at your dog’s chest whenever they continue barking even after your command(s). Dogs hate the scent of vinegar and will generally cool off and / or stop barking if you use this technique. They may even sneeze a few times, but it’s harmless so you don’t need to worry.
  1. As always, praise them once they stop barking.

For your information, your German Shepherd might, nevertheless, bark noisily, disrupting your neighborhood once you are not at home. For this instance, a training gear known as a “bark collar” can be used to help train them in their case if you decide it is something that is needed.

There are several kinds of bark collars on the market. Some of which send an electric surprise (shock collar) to your dog when they bark. Some create a high pitched sound, or emit a squirt of citronella which is annoying, but safe for your dog. Usually, these collars will help you train a problematic barker.

We recommend the high pitched collar or the citronella collars. They're not only helpful, but offer a more humane solution for your dog.
